Ackerman cited a case in Innisfil, Ontario, where part of his client’s property was being turned into a GO parking lot. The client received over $1 million after originally being offered $200,000. “That was a situation where the authority was really trying to intimidate the property owner,” Ackerman told Torontoist.

Voting Guide: Five Reasons To Vote No To Light Rail
 • sales tax increases are regressive, hurting the poor more than the rich
 • light rail has no safety standards, trains don't belong on streets
 • light rail does not relieve traffic congestion on roads or highways
 • buses have the flexibility to serve low-density cities better than trains
 • often light rail is used to destroy some businesses and homes in favor of others (condominium developers) -- developer-oriented transit (DOT)

Vote No ❌  Kansas City, Missouri - Question 3 - Failed: to raise sales taxes and shift existing tax to fund a new light rail train for a private developer. Cerner wants a light rail train from Kansas City airport to a new Cerner office park at I-435 and Bannister Road, where the Bannister Mall was torn down. Many Kansas City leaders, as well as the Kansas City Streetcar Authority, have opposed the plan, questioning its work-ability and cost. They also said the proposed light rail line wouldn’t mesh with potential expansion plans for the streetcar and would take much-needed money from the bus system.

Vote No ❌  Los Angeles, California - Measure M - Passed: raises sales tax indefinitely for $2.5 billion per year to fund Metro West Santa Ana light rail train, adding to the Measure R sales tax increase (2008-2039). Los Angeles Metro has fewer riders now than it did three decades ago, when buses were the county's only transit option. Metro has spent $9 billion of light rail trains, tracks, and subways but lost more than 10% of its riders from 2006 to 2015.

Vote No ❌   Sacramento - Measure B - Failed

Vote No ❌   San Diego - Measure A - Failed

Vote No ❌  Seattle, Washington - Sound Transit 3 - Proposition 1 - Passed (Pierce County - 56% rejected): Sound Transit built Link light rail to relieve traffic congestion. It didn't. Proposition 1 wants $2 billion each year to double Link light rail and cancel bus routes. The Smarter Transit group is against light rail, saying it's too expensive and does not increase transit ridership or decrease congestion. It advocates buses, HOV lanes, or commuter rail instead. Many towns said no (Auburn, Everett, Federal Way, Kent, Kirkland, Renton, & Sammamish).

Vote No ❌  Tigard, Oregon - Measure 34-255 - 50.3% passed by 130 votes: $3 Billion for 12 miles of light rail tracks where the population density is 6 people per acre (nowhere near 50/acre). Light rail will not reduce congestion; the average speed of light rail is the speed of bumper-to-bumper traffic. And 2015 was a record year of TriMet MAX light rail service disruptions.

Vote No ❌  Virginia Beach, Virginia - Tide extension - Failed: to raise project money previously diverted to existing light rail operating cost overruns. Surveys have found residents are concerned about light rail safety. Tide light rail has declined each year since 2013. Money would be better spent on a regional drainage system. State transportation secretary Aubrey Layne sent a letter to Mayor Will Sessoms and state officials to stop all work on the Virginia Beach light rail project.

Missing Light Rail Overhead Power Lines (Hamilton, Canada)

Billions Spent But Transit Ridership Down (Los AngelesCA)

Metro has spent $9 billion of light rail trains, tracks, and subways but lost more than 10 percent of its riders from 2006 to 2015. “It's a bit perverse,” USC engineering professor James E. Moore II told the LA Times. “You're spending all this money and you're driving ridership down. If you're investing heavily in transit, you'd hope ridership would increase.

Brian Taylor, the director of UCLA's Institute of Transportation Studies said, “There's been lots of focus by transit agencies on shiny new things, sometimes at the expense of bus routes which serve the primary constituencies of transit agencies: low-wage workers. Lots of resources are being put into a few high-profile lines that often carry a smaller number of riders compared to bus routes.
